At such moments, immersing myself in nature does me a particular good. With every step on the soft forest floor, my breath grew calmer, my thoughts clearer. When I reached a small clearing, I stopped and looked up at the sky. In the blue and red sky, the first stars and planets became visible. Very close to the moon, Venus, also known as the evening star, shone brighter than all other stars. It was a fascinating sight. At that moment, I felt strangely connected – to the sky, to the universe, to something greater.
Until then, I only knew Oups as a drawn figure on paper or from illustrator Conny Wolf's sketchbooks. But even at our first meeting in 1993, I had fallen in love with this little stick figure. From the beginning, he was more than just a comic character to me; he was a being that touched my heart. I witnessed him evolve from a simple black stick figure into a colorful, lively comic creature and be christened with the name Oups.
His unusual appearance hinted that he was not of this world. And then there was this one image: Oups with a heart in his hand. It had deeply moved me. It gave me the feeling that the place from which this little fellow came must be a place full of love – somewhere out there in the universe. Soon after, the name for his home was also born in my mind: Oups comes from the Planet of Hearts…
And because the wonderful sight reminded me of Oups that evening, I mentally sent a question into the universe: "If you, dear Oups, truly live somewhere up there on the Planet of Hearts and look down upon us humans here on Earth – what do you think of us? What do you feel when you see us?"
At that moment, something unexpected happened. It was as if the sky was answering. Very gently yet clearly, I heard a voice within me. It was Oups's voice. He answered my question with a touching story…
Thus, this magical evening became the origin of the story of the book "Oups from the Planet of Hearts," which became a bestseller as Volume 1 of an extraordinary book series and was translated into more than 20 languages.

My readings at schools always fill me with great joy. It is a gift to experience how Oups' messages playfully succeed in opening the hearts of children. Oups reminds them of the many treasures they carry in their hearts and gently shows them how to bring these to light.
