How Oups Came to School...

Margret Stöckler

The story behind this wonderful teaching material began 10 years ago, when I discovered Oups by chance and introduced him to the children in my school class. From the very beginning, the children loved the shared heart exercises with Oups and his heartwarming stories from the Planet of the Heart. The lovable little fellow increasingly became a daily part of the lessons and has since developed into an indispensable class mascot, because Oups and his stories cast a spell on children that opens their hearts and makes them smile.

Over time, my repertoire of heart exercises and community rituals with Oups grew steadily. Year after year, Oups took on more and more of the social learning in my classes.

Well, and as life sometimes has it, in early summer 2016 I had the idea to contact the author of the wonderful Oups books – Kurt Hörtenhuber.

I was quite surprised when I stumbled upon an address in Austria – even in my home state of Upper Austria – while browsing, and immediately wrote an email in which I revealed my idea of a pedagogical concept for social learning with Oups.

A few weeks later, we sat together at a table for the first time and were both equally delighted, because heart education had always been a huge concern for both me and Kurt Hörtenhuber.

It was clear from the start that together we would create a very special, lovable teaching tool for heart education.
